I actually like to vacuum (GASP!)! I really do. There’s something relaxing in the noise and the back and forth movement and the lovely, straight and beautiful lines it makes on the the carpet. Ok maybe I’m going a little too far. My point is its one of the very few housework tasks that I actually enjoy performing. My girls throw just about everything on the ground and the worst part of our house is under our dining room table as more food ends up under there than in their mouth! Yuck, yuck and yuck!
For the past month I’ve had a new little helper, the Oreck Halo Vacuum Cleaner! The Oreck Halo Vacuum Cleaner allows me to clean my carpet and create my pretty lines AND then allows me to jump over to my tile floors and kill those yucky food germs with the UV-C light underneath the vacuum! Cleaning while eliminating germs…can it get a vacuum cleaner get any cooler?
Oreck Halo Features:
- Patented UV-C light chamber kills many of the germs, bacteria, mold, dust mite eggs, and flea eggs on your floors – in just a few seconds. And it’s chemical-free.
- 2-in-1 cleaning power in just one easy step. The UV-C light kills many of the germs and microbes on your floors, and powerful suction removes dirt, dust, and other debris just like all of our trusted vacuums.
- Comes with 1 year’s supply of HEPA13 filter bags, which capture 99.95% of particles down to 0.3 microns.
- Weighing about 17 lbs., the rugged design makes it easy to use.1
- Above the floor Cleaning: Attachments include a 13 ft. detachable hose, crevice tool, and brush that quickly click-lock into place and let you easily clean stairs, drapes, furniture, corners, and all kinds of fabrics.
- Wide cleaning path and a 29-ft. power cord let you clean quickly and efficiently, reaching every corner of your home.
- Five-level height adjuster allows you to move from carpets and rugs to tile and hardwoods with ease.
Halo UV-C Technology
The Oreck Halo vacuum cleaner can reduce up to 99.9% of bacteria and up to 90% of dust mite eggs on surfaces and they have the research to back it up. Laboratory studies prove the Oreck Halo to be effective at reducing bacteria, germs and other contaminants on multiple floor surfaces. In fact the laboratory study showed that the UV-C light from the Oreck Halo light chamber reduces up to 99.9% of bacteria and up to 90% of dust mites eggs on surfaces. Just think about how many germs your tracking into your home on the bottom of your feet! Yuck! I certainly feel better knowing that my vacuum can kill many of these yucky little things!
Our Experience
Out of the Box
Right out of the box the Oreck Halo is virtually ready to go. I just had to snap on the handle and off I went. Of course I wanted to play with the UV-C light right away so I kept turning it on and off, on and off and I think my husband thought I was half nuts..but c’mon this is fun! The bags are self sealing so when your ready to throw one out, you simply pull down a tab and it closes off the debris and doesn’t make a mess. The bag is housed in a zippered front pocket and is quick and easy to get in and out of. The blue and black color make for a very attractive vacuum on the on board attachments each had their own little spots.
On Carpets
As I put it to work on the carpets, I immediately noticed that I could “hear” everything that it was sucking up and for some reason it just made me feel better to know that it was really working. The powerful brush underneath allowed me to create my artistic carpet designs while fluffing the carpet at the same time. A simple push of a button engages the UV-C light which is said to kill bacteria, mold, dust mite eggs, and flea eggs on your floors and in just a few seconds. I love that the process is chemical free as we have to be quite careful with what chemicals we allow around Lil’ Pea, as she has very sensitive skin.
Bare Floors
The large majority of our floors throughout our house are tile so I was thrilled to find out the Oreck Halo can jump between carpet and bare floors with ease. Two buttons are located on the handle of the Halo: A power button and a button that engages the spinning brush underneath. In order to switch from carpet to bare floors you simply need to switch the “brush” switch to the off position and away you go. The UV-C light feature really comes in handy with the bare floors as this is primarily where everything gets dropped.
On Board Attachments
The Oreck Halo comes equipped with a 29 ft. power cord but it also comes equipped with some great on board attachments including a 13 ft. detachable hose, crevice tool and brush that each have their own little places on board. They simply “click” into place. However, in order to use the hose and attachments you have to turn the vacuum off, open the hose port and plug the hose in. This hose is not one that you can just grab and go. This is the one and only improvement I would like to see on the Halo as it proves to take just a little bit longer in order to plug and unplug the hose.
Five Level Height Adjuster
The five level height adjuster is such a great addition to the Oreck Halo as our living room carpet is quite tall and fluffy. The height adjuster allows unit to move up and down allowing you to custom pick the best cleaning mode for your floors. This feature allows you to move from carpets to bare floors with ease.

Great review! I have this vacuum and love it! The UV light glowing from underneath is just plain awesome and feels so "high-tech." Remember Rosie from the Jetsons?!
I agree with you that attaching the hose is something that could possibly be improved upon. Other than that one small inconvenience, this is a great vacuum!

We are thinking about a new vacuum, since ours is spitting stuff back out. Thanks for posting.

Great review! My husband and I were torn between the Dyson and the Oreck and wound up with the Dyson. I've got to admit … not too crazy about the emptying of the dirt "chamber" on the Dyson. I would have much preferred a bag like the Oreck.
