Kids + Cardboard Boxes = Childhood Bliss!

My kids have played with cardboard boxes for as long as I can remember! It seems that when a descent sized cardboard box comes into our home, it’s suddenly transformed into a masterpiece, inspired by the innocence of childhood imagination. Isn’t it amazing that we spend so much time trying to find just the right toys to educate them through play, yet they gravitate towards cardboard and crayons?

However, unless your into collecting refrigerators, your probably not going to have large cardboard boxes lying around on a daily or weekly basis and unfortunately you can’t keep odd shaped cardboard boxes in your home for any length of time. In fact, that’s always the sad part. My daughter always asks “mom can we keep it forever”? It breaks my heart to have to throw it out after they have put so much time and energy into their creation. Made of 100% recycled material (ooh la la) and made in the USA, KidsCraft Playhouses has introduced two cardboard playhouse designs that will make any child go wild! The Shuttle Imagination is a large cardboard spaceship and the Creation Cottage is a playhouse featuring a door, multiple windows and even a chimney! No cutting is required as the doors and windows have been pre-cut and with the flap and slot design, the pieces connect together with ease, so there’s no need for tape.

Out of the box

A large, thin box arrived on our porch one day and the kids couldn’t wait to get the door open to see what it could be! When they saw the picture of the cottage on the front they were more than excited and couldn’t wait to get it open. The box included 3 large, flat pieces of cardboard and an additional small piece of cardboard that would soon become the chimney. We followed the included instructions to connect the pieces together and in just minutes the cottage was set up and ready for play!

The cottage features multiple windows (5 to be exact) and a door for easy in and out play. The outside of the cottage is white so that children’s colorful creations show up bright and bold! The girls wasted no time and went right to work brushing up on their art skills. Lil’ Pea drew beautiful circles and Big Pea drew each member of the family, flowers, grass and she even colored yellow around the cut-out sun on the roof. With a blank canvas the possibilities are really endless and my girls are still coloring the cottage one week later! Once they are completed with their crayon creation, I’ll let them move on to markers for extended creativity!

The cottage is quite large and 3-4 children can play inside the house comfortably. However, in order to move the cottage from room to room you have to remove the roof as it won’t fit through a standard doorway without removing it. The cardboard is thick and sturdy enough for play and coloring, yet lightweight and easy to move around. We are thrilled to find a company who has taken imagination to the next level and they deserve a big THANK YOU for keeping my kids busy through spring break!
