Hershey’s “Giving Back is Sweet” Giveaway!

You are here: Home / Reviews / Giveaways / Hershey’s “Giving Back is Sweet” Giveaway!

October 28, 2010 //  by admin//  320 Comments

From a very early age I had a lot of support around me.  There were many influential people in my life that provided for my future in various forms and I am thankful that whenever I needed a helping hand or a push in the right direction, I had a group of people who reached out a hand and mentored me along the way. Mentoring can positively affect so many life’s and I hope to instill in my own children, the importance of giving back! I realize that I have been very fortunate and there are so many that don’t have the same advantages that I have had and I’m thrilled that I have the opportunity to share the story of the Milton Hershey School with you and how you and I can give back every day!

What is the Milton Hershey School?
It’s hard to imagine that a man like Milton Hershey ever knew pain and struggle, however he was born to a family of extremely modest means and it was through his own path of hardship and failure that led him to create the Milton Hershey School.  He created a school where children could learn the values of perseverance and hard work that will ultimately lead to success and for the past 100 years that’s exactly what the Milton Hershey School has done.

The Milton Hershey School has provided a safe-haven for more than 1,800 girls and boys from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade who came from various places throughout the country.  The school provides a place for children that come from families of low-income, an opportunity to work hard, realize their potential and build towards a brighter future!

Are you making a difference in your own community?
Then head over and share your story of how your giving back!  Perhaps your a mentor in your own community, helping those in need, rescuing animals, teaching, etc.  It is through your stories that we can collectively help promote the Milton Hershey School, so that more parents of children in need are aware of this amazing and very rare opportunity!

Hershey’s Wants to Thank YOU!
For a century, you have helped the Milton Hershey School built it’s legacy and chances are you didn’t even know it!  Every time you purchased Hershey’s chocolate, you’ve given the opportunity of a first rate education with a nurturing environment to thousands of boys and girls throughout the country. Now Hershey’s wants to give back to all of you with an opportunity to win some yummy treats!

We volunteer at a local food pantry and I always love the people who used to come FOR food and now come to SERVE food to others. It’s so humbling!

Our motorcycle chapter is extremely active in our community. All proceeds from our large events are donated to charity. Our most recent event was our 2nd annual Chili cook-off. The proceeds were donated to the National Guard unit which will soon be deploying to the Middle East.

I had many more cats, but they have passed away. Please take a look at my web site http://www.catsjustletmelivehere.com . Giving is super important to me and to make sure my daughter is active in giving. We donate to our local food bank once a month and on our way to drop off I make sure she tells me why we are doing it and what kind of people we are going to help and it really is so heartwarming to know that she has knowledge of helping. She donates her old toys and clothes and is never selfish about it. I am proud and she inspires me to continue with it. I used to be down and out and I had to go to the food bank and such so I know how it feels and if people didnt give I wouldnt be where I am now!

Was able to make personal hygiene bags for 35 homeless men by using coupons and some donations. Included full size bottles of shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, shaving cream, deodorant, combs, prayer cards and letters of support. I sewed the bags myself which I’m not much of a sewer but they looked great. Felt fantastic being able to deliver them with my kids.

I lost my job in September. While I am job-hunting, I don’t want to lose any of my skills, so I am doing volunteer data entry work for an organization called “Kitty City”. They rescue cats from hoarding situations and the animal shelter that kills animals. The Animal Planet came out and filmed on us. They are starting a new show called “Must Love Cats” and our episode will air in February 2011, so please watch it.

From the most menial of tasks to helping someone learn to live move independantly. I absolutely think that every one of them is amazing. Of course, I think the people that we help are pretty darn amazing too! In fact, I provide foster care to one of them. She’s the light of my life.

Over the summer I recieved 2nd degree burns on 30% of my body after an accident in the kitchen. I was in a bad financial place and emailed a blog I frequent asking if the blog owner knew of any deals on bandages etc (I spent over $350 on medical supplies alone). She immediately posted on her blog and offers to help me buy my supplies poured in. I knew I couldn’t take it and so I asked that instead they make a donation to burn care centers especially those that deal with children. I know as a direct result at least two people made donations in my name. It made me feel good to know that people were willing to help me and others out there.

My grandmother was a big influence not only in my life, but everyone who came in contact with her. She was a real Christian woman who was well respected and respected others. When I would go to her with my problems she would say-“What goes around, comes around ” or “You get what you give”. Two very good lessons we should all learn.

We have two families in our immediate community that have been touched by cancer and lost so much.
When it first began five years ago we decided to provide holiday meals and gifts to theses families to try and ease their burdens over the holidays. But as the years have come and gone we have found that we love doing it as it truly makes our hearts feel good.
So each year we choose two more families with young children to do the same for.
It has been sad for my children to see first hand what cancer can do to a family.
But great to know what it feels like to give to others from your heart.

I think one of the most inspirational people in my life is my aunt. She has been through so much and yet she is still strong in her faith and is there for those around her. I have never heard her complain about anything! She is a breast cancer survivor. (among a whole list of other health problems)Her husband left her with 3 kids to raise and yet, I never once heard her complain about her life. She is an inspiration to everyone around her. I love my Aunt Yolande!

I’m in a Mommy group online, and last year about Christmas time a couple of the SAHM’s dh’s lost their jobs. So these families were without a lot of things, including Christmas presents. So I sent them all presents for their kids!! It made me feel so good. The one mom got on fb and thanked me. I had not told my fiance I had done this, when he got home he let me know that he was going to marry the greatest person ever!! But the best part was I felt great doing it!!

In 1982 I started the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., after being diagnosed with systemic lupus. At the time I knew no one else with lupus. Bear in mind that this was before the internet, and I had no experience in public relations or the corporate world. To my surprise, 92 people showed up despite a raging blizzard to attend the first meeting. When the social worker there asked if anyone wanted me to start a foundation addressing the needs of patients with lupus, I got a standing ovation. For five years I served as president, and I found an office, coordinated health fairs, counselled with patients in the hospital, and put together the first Western Regional Medical Conference addressing the needs of lupus patients. I did this without pay, and I had the heavy burden of being a mother to three children, dealing with lupus myself, and dealing with an abusive husband. Four years ago, after suffering a rare stroke to the brain stem and inner ear, I served on the board of the Paul Jacobsen Spinal Cord Foundation, which offered grants to those dealing with the devastation of spinal cord injuries. And those are only a handful of the things I have done to help others in the “community of man.”

I had a rough time when my 2nd child was born. My firstborn kept wanting to know when we were going to bring her back to the hospital. She was miserable when she didn’t get enough sleep, but I had to wake her up when I needed to get him from pre-school because I couldn’t leave her home alone. A neighbor took her kids to the same preschool, so she offered to take him ALL the time!! I ran into her years later and told her how grateful I was for everything she had done back then, and how could I ever pay her back? She told me to help somebody ELSE out who was struggling. So that has become my mission in life – to help out people who are struggling. I don’t think I could EVER do enough to totally pay her back, but I keep trying!

The company I had worked for had a mentoring relationship with a school/residence for troubled kids. We helped them with homework, reading, math, and played games and once in a while we were allowed to take them off campus for a treat. It was always such a delight to be working with one of the kids, and see their eyes light up when they suddenly understood something they’d been working on with you!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I had a rough home situation when I was a teenager and when I turned 18 I moved in with a good friend/mentor. She took me in for a few months until I was able to get on my feet and all she ever asked in return was that I remember this and pay it forward to someone else in a time of need. I have never forgotten that and this past year, I’ve had the opportunity to reach out to a neighbor girl who has a very similar home situation to what I did.
