When I was a young adult (19 or so), I had the opportunity to take part in the most amazing experience involving the homeless here in our town. We have a park where many of those who are without homes gather, to enjoy friendship and take a quick nap. It’s overwhelming to see how many people gather there. It was nearing Thanksgiving Day and a good friend of mine and I decided that year, that we were going to make a difference, even if it was in a small way.
We came up with a plan that included bread, two turkeys, a bag full of condiments and bottles of water. We were young and on a limited budget and we had to keep costs down, while still making a large impact. We cooked the turkeys and assembled turkey sandwiches. We then bagged them in plastic ziplocs and paired them with a bottle of water. You can only guess what we did next. We headed down to the park where the homeless gathered on Thanksgiving Day and we handed out turkey sandwiches and water to every.single.person. at the park that day!
It was an amazing feeling to see the surprised looks on their faces and the gratitude that they displayed. I learned that year that there was really no difference between them and I. Some of them were just dealt a bad card in life and they were attempting to make due with what little they had. Although it was a gift to them, it was perhaps more of a gift to me, and one that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
It was a small gesture, but it made a big impact on all of us!
Now that you know my story, I want to share a really awesome new app available for both Iphone and Android devices that allows you to not only shop for your best gift ever, but also organizes your loyalty and gift cards! I’m always digging through my wallet every time I go into Gymboree or the grocery store and with this new app, I was able to store them all on my Iphone and now I can access them all with just a push of my screen! That’s seriously cool, and trust me when I say…you want this app!
Download the App & Give to Cancer
Swagg is cool, but their also generous! Between now and December 31st, Swagg will donate $1 to Stand up to Cancer for every download of the new app! If that isn’t an amazing gift, I’m not sure what is! So I encourage you all to download the app and give it a try, while standing up to cancer at the same time.

The best gift I ever gave was some El Salvadorian coins. I had gone on several mission trips back in the 90’s and for whatever reason, had El Salvadorian coins in a little box. Fast forward ten years, and my husband and I had a sponsor child through World Vision (still sponsor, but have a different child now). I was cleaning out some boxes and found the money. So, I picked up a few trinkets including a coin purse and stuffed the coins in the coin purse. I included a note telling our sponsor child that I had once been there and found this money in my memory box and told her to give them to her parents, they would know what to do with them. About two months later, I received a photo of her proudly standing next to a twin size mattress and frame. The first bed she had ever had, and she was ten. That made my heart smile.

Great experience you had! I think it’s extremely beneficial for young ones to see life through the eyes of ones less fortunate.

Neat story! Best gift I ever gave?? I have gone three times to Ukraine for dental missions trips – Cleaning and restoring teeth for orphans – I’m pretty sure some of my best gifts were given there 🙂

That is truly amazing of all of you to do that. Great story thanks for sharing. As for the app, I’m so behind on phone technology:( I’m dreaming for a nice phone one day lol.

You’re very right, the homeless are no different than us. Kudos to you for what you did!
