Purchasing a car seat for your child is a big decision. Safety is the main concern on every parents mind, along with ease of installation, travel, and with the recent boom of multiples, many parents are now asking: how many car seats can you fit in the back seat?

A new car seat company is quickly heating up the scene, and with all of the recent stellar reviews on the Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL car seat, we just had to try this car seat out for ourselves and see what all that “fuss” was really about. Well, for the past few weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to incorporate the Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL car seat into our daily lives. From un-boxing, to daily use, to travel, I’m here to tell you what exactly all that “fuss” is about!

Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL

The NEW Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL car seats offer the first NCAP tested, high capacity LATCH system up to 80 pounds without the use of a seat belt! The Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL car seats are convertible for rear-facing children 5 – 45 lbs and forward-facing children 20 – 80 lbs in a 5-point harness. With height-adjustable and aluminum-reinforced head support, steel alloy frame and protective EPS foam, the RadianXTSL car seat provides complete side impact protection. The RadianXTSL’s low profile offers amazingly easy child boarding. In addition, with its unique patented design, the RadianXTSL car seat fits three-across in a mid-size car while providing more shoulder room for the child occupant. Memory foam padding and infant support pillows provide additional comfort. All this, and the RadianXTSL car seat folds flat for convenient travel and storage.

The Un-boxing
Right out of the box the RadianXTSL comes fully assembled and includes an infant head support pillow, back support pillow, infant base, and carry strap . The bottom half of the car seat folds inward for easy storage and travel, and unfolding the bottom half of the seat took just a few seconds. Before heading to your car for installation, it’s important to sit your child in the seat and adjust the five-point harness that includes 5 shoulder and 3 buckle positions for proper harness fit. The headrest also slides upwards or downwards to ensure proper seat height for your child.

Installation
This RadianXTSL features a SuperLATCH system (more on this feature below), as well as an Easy-Tite adjuster that according to Sunshine Kids “installs in 1 minute”. Perhaps it was just me, but I had to read the instructions about 5 times before I actually got it right, and ended up calling in reinforcements. We are using the RadianXTSL for my six year old, so we were installing the seat forward facing utilizing the SuperLATCH connectors. The SuperLATCH was very easy to install, however the tightening of the seat proved to be rather difficult. After doing this a few times, I can only imagine that this process would become easier. The seat itself has a very low profile, so getting the seat in and out of the car is quite quick and easy.

Let’s Talk Safety

SuperLATCH – The RadianXTSL uses a LATCH system unlike any other, rightfully deemed SuperLATCH! What exactly does this SuperLATCH do? Well the Radian line of car seats are the only car seats that allows installation using vehicle lower anchors for a child up to 80 lbs (for all vehicles made after September 1, 2005)! YES, 80lbs! Not only is this a step-up from the previous forward-facing weight limit of 48 lbs, but it’s also important to take into consideration the fact that the majority of unsafe child seat installations are due to a seat belt not properly being secured to the seat. The SuperLATCH has eliminated this safety risk all together, and increased the overall weight limits by a staggering 32lbs! Go SuperLATCH!

Kick it Up a Notch – The RadianXTSL is made of steel alloy, making it very sturdy and a bit heavy at the same time. All car seats have to go through government testing, however Sunshine Kids kicks it up a notch, putting their seats through NCAP testing. What exactly is NCAP testing? NCAP testing is nearly double the impact force of government testing!

Published Crash Test Results – Sunshine Kids is the only company to publish their crash test results for YOU to see. There’s no better way to get safety information on your car seat than reading the crash test results yourself!

Side Impact Protection – Sunshine Kids developed side impact protection for all of its car seats by creating a rigorous testing protocol that simulates side impact crashes based on proven European test methods. The seats were evaluated on how well they contain the head, chest and pelvis acceleration. Testing was repeatedly performed in multiple facilities both in the US and in Europe. Additional Features to Consider
The RadianXTSL Folds Flat and comes with a carry strap for travel. The seat itself weighs 24 lbs, due to it’s steel alloy frame, so although small and compact, this can be a bit heavy to tote around. Travelers will be thrilled to know that the RadianXTSL is FAA certified and reclines in two positions, in the forward facing position.

Final Thoughts
The Sunshine Kids RadianXTSL car seat offers safety features that are impressive, to say the least. The narrow seat width make this car seat an attractive buy for parents of multiple children who are looking to fit 3 car seats in the back seat or, in our case, two seats with an occasional rider in the middle. The seat itself is comfortable, given it’s memory foam padding, and the buckles are strong enough that children cannot release them on their own (for those of you with younger children, this will become an issue as your child grows older and you will be thankful for this feature).

At a retail price of $299, the fact that this car seat can accompany children from 5-80lbs. makes this a real bargain in the long run, as you’ll only need to purchase one seat for your child. For parents who travel, the included carry strap, ability to fold the seat flat, and the fact that it’s FAA approved, makes this an appealing buy. Multiple fabric choices are also available to suit every family’s taste.

  142. So many pretty prints, but since I have a little guy I would choose the ventura print. Amazing giveaway, we could def use another seat.   1338. The new law here in Ohio makes it mandatory for even older children to ride in a car seat. Even though my own Bebe Boy James isn’t mandated to ride in one, since my grandbebes are with me a LOT, having my own instead of switching them from their mom’s cars to mine would definitely help.
