With winter quickly approaching, we have found ourselves cleaning out closets, clearing off shelves, and sensing a need for change around our home. As the holiday season approaches, I often find myself clearing mantels and garnishing them with holiday decor, and re-arranging furniture to make room for my many totes filled with holiday splendor.
As we begin our process of change, I have also found myself dusting, sweeping, scrubbing, and ensuring that our home is ready for guests, gifts, and the many happenings that come with the season. With as budget minded as our family is, we have to keep cost in mind when it comes to re-arranging and getting ready for fall. Although my shopping nature tells me that I “just have to have that”, my budget savvy side kicks in and I have to remember what’s really important – and that’s to enjoy the season and the many blessings that come along with it.
Are you looking for great home looks for less this fall? Rearranging your home furnishings is a great way to give your home a new look without spending a dime. Try these easy tips to help you create a new look:
Define the purpose of the room: This will help you decide how to use the space effectively. For example, if you need a place to work or study, you will want to allow room for a desk and chair. This could affect the size of other furniture you may want to include.
Choose a focal point: You might include the television, fireplace, a window, or an aquarium as the focal point in your room. Decide where you want to focus attention so you can arrange the furniture accordingly.
Don’t waste valuable space: Position large pieces of furniture parallel to the wall, especially in smaller rooms. Diagonal placement of furniture cuts down on precious space.

This is a super neat tip to get rid of the horribly stinky smell from burnt food in the microwave. Mix one teaspoon of each: cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a bowl of water and microwave for 1 minute intervals and repeat as many times as necessary. I promise it works. 🙂

If you have food that is stuck on the inside of your microwave, you can heat a bowl full of water in it. The steam from the water will soften the food and you can just wipe out the inside of the microwave.

I think before I buy any home decor (now). I look at the “keeping it clean” aspect of it. I saw a decorative mirror I really liked, bought it, and ended up loathing it b/c it had so many crevices and scroll type edges that it was a pain in the butt to clean. The glass never did look clean next to the edges. I did the same thing with a set of table and chairs. Metal, scroll kegs. Pain to clean. Now when I see something, I look at it as I am about to clean it.

On organizing, we always use clear plastic bins (get when on sale) to store anything away. Makes it easier to find what is needed instead of having to open all containers.
Another tip that I think works wonders is along with your usual detergent and hot water, add 2 tbsp of baking soda directly to laundry and in the same wash put 1 cup of vinegar into the bleach dispenser area. Doing this to your towels every now and then will keep the ‘old towel’ smells away!

Use Tins for Storing Spice Packets. Use metal storage tins for storing spice packets in the pantry. It keeps them contained in one place and makes them easy to remove and flip through to find what you need.

I buy clothes ahead for my kids at garage sales and goodwill. In order to organize all these clothes, I put them in large plastic tubs with the age group and sex marked on the outside. They are arranged in order along my basement wall. It helps us save money.

Fold and place one complete sheet change inside one of the pillowcases. It stacks nicely and you always have everything all together.

Keep a wicker basket in the living room. When the kids leave their toys have them put them in the basket before they leave so you can return the basket to their room.
