We recently had the opportunity to visit Grocery Outlet – a bargain market offering name brand groceries at a 40-60% discount! Although Grocery Outlet has been here in my hometown for many years, I had yet to actually visit the store and was excited to see what it had to offer.
The Mission: See what $50 will buy at Grocery Outlet. Sounds pretty simple, right?
My Initial Thought: $50 gets me about a half a bag of groceries at my neighborhood grocery store, I can’t imagine I’m going to walk out of there with more than one full bag of groceries.
The Experience: The store was layed out rather nicely and does’nt require you to walk through the store in one way, like many other discount grocery stores do (I can’t stand that!). I was able to freely walk the isles as I pleased and choose which isle I felt like starting at – this was a biggie for me! The staff was very kind and helpful, and the shelves and freezer bins were organized rather neatly, to my surprise. The price tags were easy to find, easy to read, and it was even easier to see how much I was saving compared to my neighborhood market (see pic below).
I have to be honest with you, I was shocked at some of the low price tags. For instance, to make my famous spaghetti sauce I need 3 large cans of whole peeled tomatoes with basil. Not only is this something very difficult to find in this town, but I typically pay about $4/can. At Grocery Outlet, I was able to pick up cans of canned Organic whole peeled tomatoes with basil for $.79/can. Seriously? That’s a HUGE difference in price and one that could really take down the price we spend on groceries every month.
I have often thought that discount grocery outlets only supplied generic goods – at Grocery Outlet this is not the case at all! Nearly every item in the store was name brand and far below grocery store prices. Here’s a few examples of what we found….
The Results: After shopping the store and adding our favorite items to my cart, I was certain that I had well over $50 of groceries in my cart, so I headed to checkout. You can imagine my shock when the nice lady let me know that my total was just $41.76! I honestly couldn’t believe it.
Here’s what we scored for a whopping $41.76! Can you believe it?
