Which are the best disposable diapers for newborns? Becoming a mother for the first time can seem like a time when you are overwhelmed with lots of choices about which products you should buy. Diapers of course are one of the absolute essentials!
Choosing the best diapers for your newborn does not have to be complicated. Here is a simple guide as to how to find out which diapers will be best for your newborn.
Which Brand of Diapers are Best for Newborns?
There really isn’t one brand which is better than another. The major brands are Huggies and Pampers.
You will usually find that you quickly develop a preference for one brand over another. Some new moms love Huggies, others swear by Pampers. But even that may change as your baby grows.
I always found that when my babies were newborn I only used Pampers as the Huggies never seemed to fit. But every baby and new mom will have their own preference!

Before your baby is born it is a good idea to buy 2 or 3 different types of diapers in newborn sizes. It is a good idea not to buy the largest packs at first because you will be deciding which ones you like best, and which is the best fit for your baby. But once you know which ones you like best there are ways of saving money on diapers which I go through later in this article.
Newborn Diaper Sizes
Newborn sizings are also different for each brand. The sizes are always in weight and are usually are good guideline as to which will fit your baby best.
Huggies and Pampers brand have preemies up to 6 pounds and newborn sizes as up to 10lbs.
Size 1 diapers are from 8lbs to 14lbs. Confusing! What if my baby weighs 9lbs which size do I need? No simple answer unfortunately as it will depend upon the individual fit on your baby.
My recommendation is to start out with the small packs of the newborn size for no other reason than these are usually the cheaper ones per diaper. If they don’t fit then try the size 1. This is why it is important not to buy the huge boxes at first!
How Many Diapers Does A Newborn Use in a Day?
At first you will be using around 10 to 14 diapers a day. Don’t worry – this does slow down a lot after the first weeks!
The last thing you want to be concerned about in the first weeks is not having enough diapers so one idea is to buy the leading brands and have them in your house ready for your baby to come home to from the hospital.
One suggestion is that you try the best selling disposable diapers for newborns. You can order these online so that you have them ready:
Huggies Little Snugglers Diapers for Newborn, Big Pack, 76 Count are $0.26 each
Pampers Swaddlers Newborn 92 Count are $0.27 each.
Do I Need to Buy the ‘Sensitive’ Diapers for Newborns?
This is very much a personal choice as of course these type of diapers offering extra features such as ‘hypoallergenic’ or ‘chlorine free’. These diapers are often more expensive than the regular ones so it is up to you to decide how important these features are for you.
Earth’s Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Diapers are priced at just $0;26 right now for the newborn size which makes them exactly the same price as the standard Huggies.
Seventh Generation Free and Clear Baby Diapers, Newborn, 36 Count (Pack of 4) are priced at $0.28 so not much higher than ‘regular’ diapers.
I really do recommend that you spend a little time researching what the differences are between the different types of diapers when you have some time. The debate about the environmental impact of diapers is of course a very hot topic. And it can be a complicated one.
In your first weeks at home with your newborn my own personal view is you want to make things as simple as possible. My personal experience was that these chlorine free diapers were not as absorbent as the regular brands. This is a while ago and things may have improved. If they have then please leave me a comment as I would love to hear from you.
And before I get too many comments about the dark side of disposable diapers let me reveal that after the first couple of months I was a cloth diaper convert!

Katie Smith
I hated pampers! I always got blow outs with them, I do however like huggies or Luvs, I have yet to have a problem with them.
