A few months ago we stopped by Ikea on our way back from vacation. The nearest Ikea is about an hour and a half away from where we live, so we have to hit it when we can. At the time, the girls really needed new beds and we decided to pop in and see what they had available. Of course, the girls fell in love with the bunk beds, and I must admit, with the small size of their room, this would have been a really great option. The best part was that they had a number of the bunk beds on sale!
However…..
Lil’ Pea is currently 3 1/2 and the only thing that I kept envisioning was her falling off of the top bunk, and us rushing off to the hospital. Call me crazy, paranoid, or overprotective, but it seemed like a risk that I just wasn’t willing to take. We opted for two twin beds that were just what we were looking for and they were under $100 a piece! However, now that we have them in, I’m reconsidering our original idea. The room is just too small, and there’s not much room to play, or even walk around for that matter.
So I’m asking all of you for your advice. Do you currently own kids bunk beds? At what age do you think kids are ready for bunk beds? Have you considered purchasing bunk beds and have the same reservations as I am? Am I being crazy here?

We just got a bunk bed for our 6 and 3 year olds. The 6 year old got the top bunk and the 3 yr old has the bottom. No jumping or falling off of it yet and we have had it for a month or so. I think it depends on the children. You know how they are and if you think they will fall off the top then wait. We also decided to go with a bed that has stairs built in to it instead of one with a ladder. I think the ladder asks for trouble with little kids.

I think the stairs idea is a great one! Thank You for sharing!

My boys are 3.5 and 1.5. Their room is small. There really is no way even 2 twin beds can fit in their room with their dresser. The only option we really had was bunks and that is what we got. I don’t know why but I have never worried about my 3.5 year old falling from the top. My 1.5 year old I have and never once thought of allowing him up there. We’ve have the beds for a coupld months now and we have never had an issue. They are not allowed to play. The 1.5 year old has even been caught up top and knows how to get himself down, much to our amazment. We have the ladder under the bed to discourage the little on from climbing. So the older boy has to climb up from the end instead. The bed we got can be accessed either way. When we are comfortable with the younger one being up top we will get the ladder out and put it up.
