$400 Volkswagon Summer Roadtrip Giveaway

You are here: Home / Reviews / Giveaways / $400 Volkswagon Summer Roadtrip Giveaway

June 10, 2010 //  by admin//  295 Comments

Summer is just around the corner which means it’s time to round up the kids and head out on a family vacation road trip! We are heading out Saturday morning on a 10 day roadtrip through sunny Southern California and you can bet we’re going to stop at every theme park along the way! When I was a child, we spent plenty of time road-trippin’ throughout California and other nearby states in our motor home and those are memories that will stay with me for a lifetime!

Whether your going across country to a national park or just taking the kids up to the grandparent’s house, half the fun is getting there. And it doesn’t matter where you’re headed; you’re going to want to be comfortable along the way. With 12v power outlets, JoyBox™ Entertainment system, UConnect® Bluetooth® system, roof rack and more the Routan provides comfort and fun for the family. It’s a beauty isn’t it?

But alas, there are times where things don’t go…shall we say… smoothly! I know we have plenty of stories, like the time we drove nearly an hour past our destination for dating and to our surprise we found a Pea Soup Anderson (there are only 2 of these restaurants in California) and ended up having one of the best times of our lives! I’m sure you have your stories too… Did a trip to Disneyland end in a comedy of errors? Did you take a wrong turn in Arizona but end up discovering a great old ghost town? The good, the bad, and the ugly, we wanna hear ‘em!

The last road trip we took, the car broke down in south carolina and we were stuck there for almost a whole day. Luckily we were by a hotel so we werent stuck on the side of the road. ever since then, I prefer not to drive for road trips.

The last roadtrip we took was our daughter’s first. Half way to Arizona, we hit something and got a flat tire. Hubby fixed it in the freezing cold and little bean slept the whole time!

I’d have to say it was when I was younger and my mom took my twin sister and I on our first road trip. She had high hopes of taking us the scenic route by the ocean and we both got so carsick that she had to stop multiple times. 😉

my best friend in the whole wide world and I took our families on a week long adventure to the beach several years ago. We had planned all winter and spring for this adventure and we were stoked when it finally came time to take off. Our trip to the beach was without flaw. We had an awesome week of baking in the sun and just enjoying spending quality time together. The week ended all to soon and it was time to load up and head home. We were about two hours into our trip home, kind of in the middle of no-where, when we heard a POP and I noticed my friend, who was driving, grasp the wheel and get a frightened look on her face. We had a FLAT! Now the unfortunate thing was that we had not included a flat in our monetary plans so we immediately stressed over where the money for a new tire would come from. Then we stressed over how in the world would we get to the jack and crank on the inside to lower the spare tire and get it changed. Next we worried if the spare would be flat since it had never been used. And our final worry was how far we would have to travel on the spare before we could find a place to get a new tire put on.
We had to unpack the van to get to the jack and crank, the spare wasn’t flat, and we ended up driving another hour or so before we found a little tire joint on the side of the road that was able to replace the flat. Now the fear of how much it would cost and how we would pay for it set in. Fortunately the shop owner was a very nice man who gave us a great deal on a tire and took an out of state check without hesitation. We knew the check would be good by the close of business and told him as much. I guess seeing all the kids that piled out of the van when we stopped and all the junk that was packed gave him a ‘family’ feeling and we could not have been more grateful.

Every year, my family headed out for our annual family road trip. This time, I was 15, and we went to Arkansas. We stayed in the cutest cabins right on the waterfalls. I was 15.
and I met a boy that summer on vacation.
Ironically, we stayed in touch, and now, he is my husband!

We were having a really bad drive… got stuck outside in the thunder and lightning, everyone was screaming and crying…. and as we pulled away from the atm (we had gone to get dinner and they were cash only so we had to leave and go get cash), my 3 year old says, “Daddy, while you were paying, I was farting.” The laughter made the last two hours of craziness melt away!

The most disastrous Roadtrip story would have to be when we went to go visit family up north while trying to potty train our 2 year old daughter! We either stopped every 10-15 minutes for a bit or I was stuck cleaning and changing my daughter after her accidents. Finally we gave up and put a Pull Up on her of the rest of the trip. Went smoothly after that!

I’ll tell you about my favorite memory traveling. It was when I was going to be a junior in high school. My family (Dad, Mom, Older sister, and I) took a motorhoming trip cross country. We went everywhere, did everything, and I had a blast. Would do that again in a heartbeat!

My husband and I drove up to his Dad’s house in northern CA back in the fall of 2005. I drove the car and he drove a U-Haul to take some old furniture of his grandmother’s to him. We got about 2 hours into our road trip when the U-Haul started losing oil pressure. Then, the truck DIED!!! We called the U-Haul people to come and get us and their truck so we could change it out for another one. We were on the phone back and forth with them and with the a to truck company. While we were waiting, it rained. We had to sit there with the engine off, in the hot and humid car with the windows slightly cracked. It was a hot day to say the least. We also didn’t get any lunch, so we were eating up our snacks that we had brought with us. We sat there for almost 5 hours before a tow truck came. Then we got to the U-Haul and had to move the furniture from one truck to the other. Everytime we see a U-Haul truck broken down on the side of the road we remind each other of that back road trip.

We love road trips! We take at least one a year and have already taken 2 this year with one more scheduled in July.

We treat stops like a NASCAR pit stop and try to see how fast we can get gas, use the bathroom and get back on the road–it’s like a family challenge and so fun!

Ours was a “memorable” trip .It was our drive home after Christmas Vacation in 2008. We left (AZ) as planned but didn’t make it home (IA) until 5 days later. As we were 2 hours away from our first nights stop the car overheated and threw us into a “Groundhog Day “(the movie) spiral that seemed would never end. I won’t go into specifics but let’s just say we were in a town with no mechanics who had knowledge of our vehicle ( a VW GLI…yes we still have the car…we love it and have had no other issues since) , no rental car companies (closest was eighty miles away) and no uhaul available other than a 26 ft truck and trailer . It was myself, my hubby, and our two kids, 9 and 1 1/2. We finally were able to get someone who could tow us to a dealership in TX that could fix our car. Once there it took less tha 4 hours to fix the car. What would have been a 2 day trip …turned into a seven day trip. We’ll never forget it.

We drove from South Dakota to Seattle in a Camaro in the dead of winter–over those mountain passes covered with snow in a car that sits about 6 inches above the pavement! And I got to ride in the back seat all the way, along with all the luggage. Very cramped quarters to say the least.

My favorite road trip I like to think back on was the one my then boyfriend (now husband) and I took after dating for a couple months to go visit a friend we both knew from college. On the way back home I found myself looking at him a lot and seeing him in a different way. It was the beginning of our understanding each other differently and forming a unit.

One year a friend my husband and I were driving back to Maryland from Florida…we stopped at a rest stop to use the bathroom while my husband slept in the back. My friend and I hopped into the car and drove away, about 10 minutes later I got this feeling and reached into the back seat…no husband…

My best road trip story was from my own childhood and being stuck on a local highway coming back from my aunts. The entire family was in a Ford Bronco (5 people and 2 dogs + luggage) the road was shutdown for an accident and us girls all had to pee really bad. My mom emptied out one of my brothers toy pails and we took turns using it in a small section of space she cleared out in the back!! I guess my parents pack way lighter than we do as we only have 4 people and we still manage to take up every last bit of space in our minivan!!

Once when I was driving back to college alone my mom insisted on coming along and flying back home because she didn’t want my making the 7 hour drive by myself. She came down with food poisoning 2 hours into the trip, and it ended up being an 11 hour nightmare with lots of stops for her to use the restrooms. She let me drive alone after that.

On the first trip we took with our then three girls to myrtle beach in our jeep and the a/c broke and we couldn’t get it fixed in time and had to drive down there in temps reaching 100 degrees and we were staying about 20-30 miles from the beach as it was due to the last minute reservations and were miserable due to the driving distance and just being hot and then the next year we decided to rent a vehicle and we realized once we were packed in it and on the road it didn’t have a cd player…who makes cars these days without a effing cd player and had to listen to the same song playing on the radio for over 4 hours on the way to myrtle beach to make better memories…

Right after my wife and I married, we were on our way back to Arizona from Kansas when I hit some road debris and injured the transmission on our three week old car. It still ran, but I had to drive the whole way back in 3rd gear, and my new wife was sick so I had to drive the whole way through by myself.

After moving to the Continental U.S., my brother decided to come visit us for Christmas. He was uber excited to see the snow! Unfortunately, due to a snow storm, he was stuck at the Cincinnati airport and couldn’t make his connecting flight to South Dakota. So we (hubby, BIL and I) drove through the night/morning/day through 4 different states to go get him stopping only for the bathroom and food. We finally made it back on Christmas morning! Turned out to be a pretty fun Christmas.

Our worst road trip was when we starting out on a 14 hour drive and had to stop 3 hours into it (middle of the night) because of weather. It took 2 whole days and one sleepless night to get there!

I remember how my little sister used to get carsick and the only way to prevent it was to sleep the whole time. She was asleep in the back of the station wagon when we stopped for a potty break. After we all got back in to resume our trip, it was several miles before we realized little sis was no longer asleep in the back! In a panic, we hurriedly turned around and went back to the gas station and found her sitting quietly with a soda pop in her hands and a friendly older lady watching over her. She’d awakened and decided to get out and none of us saw it. Of course it wasn’t very funny at the time, but we still laugh about it now. 🙂

My husband and I were living in AZ and drove to MO to get married. On the way back we hit some debris on the freeway and blew the transmission in our new car. My husband had to drive it at a top speed of 60 mph back to AZ straight through to get us to our honeymoon on time. And to make matters worse I had a terrible flu and couldn’t even help drive! But we made it on time and are still happily married 8 years later 🙂

In August of 2003, My mom, step dad, step brother and I took off from California heading towards MI for the Harley 100th Anniversary ride. This three week long trip had its ups, its downs and its inbetweens. We hit every type of weather. Hail does not feel good in shorts when it first began. We met all sorts of people from all over the world. Got to visit historial landmarks. During each destinated stop on the way to MI and while there, a card could be stamped that is between 1 to 3 points dependinng on the destination. After you reach a certain amout of points, can turn it into the Harley Owners Association to be put into a drawing for various things. A month later, I got 2nd place of a book 100th Harley Davidson Special Limited Addition. Only 75 of these was given out!

The best road trip was driving through the middle of the desert in Mexico on a 12 hour road trip. We were in a small Mexican car with no a/c and no radio. I was stuck in the backseat the whole trip. We didn’t speak any Spanish which made it very interesting to cross the borders between the Mexican states. The border guards with their machine guns added to the whole adventure. It was the adventure of a lifetime.

A favorite memory is about every 3 years my family and i went to see family in Nebraska. This was a 2-day drive from Arizona. My mom and dad packed the car the night before and laid out a sleeping back in the back of the station wagon (this was before seat belts).. my brothers and I would fight to see who got this coveted spot. My mom always made brownies and bought Dunkin Donuts and we had soda pop… these were all very, very special treats that we got only a few times a year. I think it is for this reason that I still loved road trips!!

We were traveling to a camping trip with our daughters, ages 8 and 11. There was a lot of giggling in the back seat, and after several minutes, we learned why. Our youngest showed us a sketch she’d been making of her ‘view’–the back of her dad’s head, complete with a shiny bald spot.

Tranferred to Virginia Beach hubby in military, just had our youngest son in September so we thought we would pile everybody in our Saturn, luggage, presents, baby seat and all to drive straight through to Orlando for Christmas Day to surprise my family. All I can properly write at this time it was a trip from HELL. Nothing open because when we were traveling it was technically Christmas Day, baby wouldn’t sleep at all, he stayed awake for exactly sixteen hours. Needless to say we arrived in time for Christmas dinner.

I drove from Indiana to Las Vegas in May of 1994 in a 1985 dodge colt hatchback with no a/c. We drove the 1st 29 hours straight, taking turns of course, then stopped in Flagstaff. The car was packed to the hilt (I was moving) and we couldn’t even recline the seats. I also brought a beta fish with me…he swam in his bowl at our feet. Flagstaff to Vegas, 5 hours, was worse than the 1st 29 hours…we reached Vegas on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, it was 107 degrees, and traffic was STOPPED. Then the fish died (I wish I could have gotten some ice to cool off the water…)
It was a memorable trip & one I hope to never repeat!

One time, in the days before GPS and Mapquest, some friends and I were going to a concert in St. Louis MO. At some point, our driver took a wrong turn and we had no idea until we ended up in Metropolis IL. We tried to backtrack, but had a flat tire and had to spend most of our money getting it fixed. Needless to say, we never went on a long journey with that guy again.

My mother in law offered to watch the three boys for a weekend so my husband and i could enjoy our first ever weekend alone since having children. We booked our room and paid non-refundable on expedia, started our 6 hour drive. Three hours later my mother in law called to say she had a job offer and had to start the next day and bailed out on watching the three boys. We ended up having one queen size bed with five people in it. Then the entire 6 hour drive home the three boys got sick and vomited all over the minivan.

One time we were driving to a wedding in southern Texas on a budget. Brought apples, sandwiches and fruit snacks for our food for the trip. Stops were quick and only as necessary. After attending the wedding and eating out with the family we were heading home and ran out of gas. Obviously we had to have gas but it was going to take a fair chunk of change to fuel our 12 passenger van. Pulled into the nearest station with reasonable prices and Dad filled us up. When he went in to pay the man at the counter told him it had already been paid for. Dad told him he hadn’t paid at the pump and the guy said no the man in the other van paid for yours as well. 🙂 Dad hadn’t seen anyone else in a van and he came out and asked us and we hadn’t seen anyone else either. We believe to this day an Angel paid for our gas.

We’ve taken MANY roadtrips over the years, but one that really stands out is when my parent’s suburban broke down. We were on our way home after being gone for over a week and suddenly our suburban broke down. There we were in the middle of some tiny town that we didn’t know and there were my parents and 5 of us kids. We had no idea what to do, but fortunately the town was the friendliest place ever and they rescued us, fed us, and we ended up having a great day while we waited for a tow truck. We ended up having to ride back home crammed in a tow truck. It was definitely an experience!

I remember growing up, we went on were going on a trip from MN to MT. Our car broke down right before we made it to MT. My dad and brother tried had to push the car to get it to the side of the road. We had to call a tow truck and all 5 of us and the driver were crammed into the truck cab. When we arrived at the hotel, my mom was flustered and walked into a glass door; she flew right out of the clogs that she was wearing 🙂 Years later, we still laugh at those memories.

When I was first married and after my oldest was born, we took a mini road trip to visit our in-laws to show off our new baby. However, the new bundle of joy did not like road trips and we had to pull over about every half an hour to clean up vomit. At one point while holding her near the hatchback (old car/old story/old woman), the hatch slid down on her head but luckily she wasn’t hurt. We eventually made it but realized that road trips were out of the picture for a bit.

Once when my son was only 3 years old, I traveled from Texas to NC with my in-laws and my son. We were somewhere in Mississippi and it was raining really hard and I ran over a tool that had fallen from a truck in front of us. I had a blow out, but was able to steer the Suburban over to the shoulder safely. My father in law has a heart condition, so I had to change the tire myself. Not one person stopped to help! I was drenched, but we got there safely!

We had a 4 hour drive to bring our 8 month old daughter home after her open heart surgery. We were using a car bed instead of a car seat so she had to lie flat the whole time. She was on continuous gtube feeds, a pulse ox, oxygen, needing tons of meds, and Mommy had to squeeze into the backseat of an SUV with all this stuff. She was so traumatized from the surgery that she refused to swallow. We had to pull off the road often so I could suction her mouth because she refused to swallow after her surgery. Twenty minutes from home we ran out of oxygen and had to do an emergency swap out on the side of the road. We got home after midnight, 6.5 long hours later to find that our petsitter had locked us out. My husband had to break in a window. An hour later, when I think I can finally get some rest, I realized that the surgeon did not order the pain med we had requested and had to call poison control. Worst road trip ever!

We just got back from a mini-road trip that didn’t go so well, despite pre-planning. We took my daughter and a friend and neglected to bring identical toys for the two. They kept wanting whatever the other had and spent most of the trip switching back and forth.
