I don’t think there’s anyone out there that wouldn’t like to help the environment and save money at the same time. In an effort to be more green through the use of more natural products, reducing the amount I use of an item, or repurposing around my house; I have found ways to save money at the same time. No longer can we use the excuse that going green or organic is too expensive because that’s simply not the case. At least not for these common bathroom items.

  1. Toss your fancy, high priced toner and use organic apple cider vinegar or witch hazel instead. The cost per use is very low, natural, and much better for your skin.
  2. Cut up those old, ratty t-shirts that are just sitting in your drawers. Repurpose them to be used in place of cotton balls to apply toner or remove makeup.
  3. Petroleum jelly is a gentle, yet effective way to remove eye makeup. It also works great as a lip and skin moisturizer. While petroleum is not organic by any means – it is a budget friendly alternative to other removers that are comprised of countless toxic ingredients.
  4. Make your own body scrub. By making your own body scrub, you’re in control of the texture, smell, and ingredients. If you look on the back of most store bought scrubs, I’d bet there’s a number of polysyllabic, hard to pronounce ingredients listed.
  5. Make a deal with yourself not to buy more products until you use up what you have. Finding alternative, homemade products isn’t for everyone but you can do your part in reducing waste and clutter if you use what you have before buying more.

I use witch hazel! It’s awesome and so cheap! I also just started cutting up old t shirts and started using them instead of cleaning sponges!

I stopped using the apple cider vinegar when I was on vacation because I thought I could go without it and I was so wrong – that stuff has cleared up my skin considerably. Except a couple of hormonal times a month, my skin looks pretty decent.

Thanks for allowing me to guest post!

I so have to try to make my own body scrub now. I have such sensitive skin, it’d be nice to control what touches it. Great suggestions, thanks so much!

Very good tips there. You can use baking soda, epsom salts, and table salt to make very good bath salts. Also, use baking soad for brushing your teeth–it gets them white and leaves your mouth smelling very fresh.
